IN collaboration with L’Occitane Malaysia, the Penang Green Council (PGC) is gearing up for the sixth edition of the Penang Green Market to promote environmental sustainability.

The event is set to take place at Gurney Plaza on May 4 and 5, and at 1st Avenue on June 22 and 23.

State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu said Penang Green Market serves as a platform for locals, entrepreneurs, and consumers to support sustainable practices.

“The Penang Green Market will showcase the best of what our community has to offer in the pursuit of environmental sustainability.

“We are delighted to collaborate with the companies involved, sharing the same goals to empower our community through this engagement activity.

“We aim to make this event a success,” he told a press conference in Komtar today.

To enhance the festive atmosphere, PGC will be organising a songwriting competition, titled ‘Melodies of Change’, on June 22 to commemorate World Environment Day.

PGC general manager Josephine Tan expressed her delight at the participation of L’Occitane Malaysia in the event.

“These markets will feature a variety of highlights, including lifestyle and eco-friendly products, as well as displays and exhibitions on plants and urban farming.

“We strongly encourage the public to bring their own containers and reusable bags for shopping, with sustainability as the main takeaway message from their market experience,” she said.

More than 30 vendors have expressed interest in both events.

Registration and submission for the competition are open from April 23 to May 25. All entries will undergo a screening stage by the judges. The winners will stand a chance to win cash prizes of up to RM8,000.

Also present was L’Occitane Malaysia Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) senior manager Clarance Boo.

Separately, Sundarajoo said the state would embark on a significant planting of one million trees on April 22 in conjunction with Earth Day.

“My constituency (Perai) will contribute to this effort by planting about 150,000 trees on that day. I look forward to this special occasion,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sundarajoo said he would look into the squatters’ resettlement issue at Kampung Manis in Perai.
