10 students, 2 teachers in Penang picked for prestigious innovation camp in China

 

A TOTAL of 10 students and two teachers from 11 schools in Penang have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 7th Belt & Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop in China from Nov 5 to Nov 11.

 

They are divided into two groups.

 

The first group for the maker camp and teacher workshop in Chongqing comprises Chan Xiau En (SMJK Convent Datuk Keramat, Form 4), Chloe Poon Rou Yi (SMJK Perempuan Cina, Form 4), Khor Yi Qian (SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman, Form 4), Deveschwaar Vikneshmaran (SMK Bertam Indah, Form 4), Gan Zhong Wen (SMK St Xavier, Form 4), Ten Lee Vui (SMK St Xavier, teacher), and Muhammad Aameer Faisal Anuar (Penang Science Cluster).

 

The second group for a similar maker camp and workshop in Nanning, Guangxi comprises Lim Xin Ru (SMJK Heng Ee Cawangan, Form 3), Sara Qistina Ahmad Zainuddin (SMK Bukit Jambul, Form 4), Vishaalini Karthigesu (SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam, Form 4), Arash Badlishah Huzainol Hisham (SMK Permatang Pasir, Form 4), Muhammad Syamil Imran (SMK Penang Free, Form 3), Teh Muai Hong (SMK Permai Indah, teacher) and Nurul Hamimah Abdul Razak (Penang Science Cluster).

 

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present to encourage the team before they embark on this journey representing the country, said this opportunity offers a unique platform for the students and educators to immerse themselves in a world of innovation and creativity.

 

“Our students have been selected based on their exceptional involvement and leadership in various pioneering programmes facilitated by the Penang Science Cluster (PSC), including MakerLab, First Tech Challenge (FTC), and Girls in Engineering and Tech (GET) initiatives.

 

“The teachers have been chosen through the Train-The-Trainer (TTT) programme by PSC.

 

“We anticipate that their experiences during this journey will empower them to make meaningful contributions to our local community.

 

“A special gratitude to the organising team in China for their tireless efforts and generous sponsorship to make this programme possible,” he said in his speech during the event at PSC in Wisma Yeap Chor Ee today.

Chow said the state, through PSC, was proud to sponsor the flight tickets.

 

“We believe these students and teachers will strengthen our resolve to create leaders and innovators of tomorrow,” he added.

 

Furthermore, Chow also expressed his hopes that they would have an enjoyable and enriching workshop in China.

 

Ding Xiao, China’s acting consul-general in Penang, said the maker camp is jointly organised by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

 

“This camp provides students with the opportunity to collaborate with the best of their age on an international level,” she said.

 

She added that China places great importance on science, technology and innovation to implement the innovation-driven development strategy.

 

PSC chief executive officer Datuk Ooi Peng Ee also extended his heartfelt gratitude to the selected young students and teachers for their participation in this prestigious event.
