About 1,000 participants, including Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, joined the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Penang Heritage Walk 2024 at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town today.
Making a comeback after the Covid-19 pandemic, this 12th edition of the walk aimed to raise funds for MRCS Penang Chapter’s essential community services.
Chow commended the walkers for participating in the meaningful 3km walk, which began and concluded at Beach Street.
“Your presence here today demonstrates your dedication to supporting the MRCS and its vital mission. By participating, you are not only walking for your own health and wellness but also contributing to the countless individuals and families who rely on MRCS’s critical services.
“The funds raised through this event will go a long way in covering the yearly expenses of the society, enabling them to continue their essential work in disaster relief, health services, and community support,’’ Chow said in his speech.
The chief minister also extended gratitude to the MRCS Penang Chapter for organising the event and acknowledged the crucial role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and uniformed bodies in serving the community.
“Your commitment, passion, and hard work are evident, and today’s success is a testament to your dedication.
“Furthermore, let’s not forget the contributions of our volunteers and sponsors, without whom this event would not have been possible. Your support enhances our ability to bring people together and achieve great things for our community. Thank you for making today a memorable occasion.
“Let’s keep the spirit of unity alive and continue to walk together for a better tomorrow,” Chow added.
Datuk Loh Nam Hooi, organising chairman and MRCS Penang Chapter deputy chairman, Rosaline Heah Gaik See, MRCS Penang Chapter vice-chairperson I, and Chow Thian Pow, MRCS Penang Chapter vice-president II, also accompanied Chow during the walk. Also present at the event was MRCS Penang Chapter treasurer Christopher Tan Tee Kheng.
Loh noted that the walk allowed participants to experience George Town’s historic precincts and appreciate the city’s unique character.
He also thanked Chow and the state government for their unwavering support of MRCS’s humanitarian work, including disaster relief initiatives.
He also thanked the event’s sponsors, donors, and volunteers for their collective contributions. Special appreciation was given to Samet Lim and her friends, who energised participants with a lively Zumba session.
Additionally, Loh acknowledged the efforts of the Red Crescent Youth and Link members, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) members, school teachers, and friends for their role in fundraising and encouraging participation.
