The annual ‘LovePENANG Run 2024’ drew an impressive crowd of 10,000 participants to Jalan Pantai (Beach Street) in George Town, showcasing the community’s patriotism for both state and country.
Before flagging off the race with several dignitaries, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed gratitude to the participants for their overwhelming support.
“The impressive turnout reflects not only the commitment and spirit of Penangites but also the enthusiasm of participants from neighbouring states in engaging in public activities,” Chow said.
He also emphasised the event’s alignment with the Penang2030 vision, which prioritises family as the state strives to become a Family Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.
The event is part of the state government’s efforts to build a healthier future and address Malaysia’s rising obesity rate – the second highest in Southeast Asia. Obesity is linked to illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer.
Chow later joined the participants in the 5km run alongside state executive councillor Lim Siew Khim, Penang State Sports Council director Harry Chai, Penang Forward Sports Club adviser Datuk Tom Khoo, and club president Lim Choo Hooi.
Also present at the event were state executive councillor Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, Deputy Chief Police Officer Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin, Decathlon Malaysia CEO Li Jiao, Northern City Leader & Country Communication Leader Shaffa Mus, and representatives from various sponsors.
The route started at Jalan Pantai, leading participants through Lebuh Light, Lebuh Farquhar, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Jalan Larut, Jalan Hutton, Jalan Penang, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, and back to Jalan Pantai.
Throughout the event, Chow interacted warmly with participants, taking photos, shaking hands, and even greeting an elderly resident at his doorstep.
Among the runners were Bayan Lepas residents Mohammad Aiman Rosli, and his wife, Zahara Najihah Zakaria, both 33, along with their three young children – Aisyzaim, six; Aisyzayyad, three; and Aisyzaydam, nine months.
“Even before we had children, we joined the ‘I Love Penang Run’ in 2017. We want to stay healthy and encourage our children to embrace healthy activities like this. It’s also our way of showing love for Penang,” they said.
Volunteers along the route held motivational placards with messages like Health is Wealth and Sweat Now, Shine Later, inspiring participants on the bright and beautiful morning.
Rela members and police personnel managed traffic to ensure a safe and smooth event, while St John’s Ambulance members on bicycles provided additional support.
The event concluded with an exciting lucky draw, offering prizes such as a Perodua Axia, an electric motorcycle, 20 bicycles, and smartphones.
