IT is vital for children to get proper eye care as it is can affect them for the rest of their lives.

To raise this awareness among children, SpecTruck, in collaboration with L’Occitane groupe and supported by Jawi assemblyman H’ng Mooi Lye, conducted the ‘Sayangi Mataku’ programme at selected schools in Jawi.

SpecTruck Sdn Bhd, based in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is a one-stop mobile optical shop that provides eye checks as well as glasses.

SpecTruck aims to cover 15 schools in the Jawi constituency. Today was their second school service delivery at SJKC Pai Teik after having been to S.K. Keledang Jaya, Nibong Tebal.

“It took two days for us to complete free eye checkup for every students of SK Keledang Jaya. A total of 160 children were screened out of which six were referred for further evaluation,” SpecTruck managing director Datuk Seri David K.H. Sew told a press conference on Feb 20.

“Those six students found to have vision abnormalities will receive their spectacles three days from the after their checkup.

“We want to sponsor 200 free spectacles for students from poor families,” Sew said.

H’ng added that the objective of this programme was to spread awareness on early detection of eye disorders, refractive errors and other eye ailments.

“It comes as no surprise that the children and teens nowadays are addicted to gadgets and can’t spend an hour without these devices. The digital screens they look at have a much greater impact on their eyes.

“School children need to have eye checkup early because if they can’t see or read clearly, that will prevent them from achieving their full potential. Thus, this makes early detection and treatment of any vision problems really critical,” H’ng told the reporters.
L’Occitane groupe public relations manager Clarance Boo, who was present, added that some of the symptoms include difficulty in seeing the whiteboard which also leads to teachers’ complaint about the child being inattentive in class.

The students also avoid doing tasks they are required to look at near distance objects such as doing school work.
