THE lion dance is regarded as an auspicious ritual tradition in Chinese culture, believed to bring good luck and happiness to the community.
Apart from this, this tradition fosters the value of teamwork among younger participants, promoting mutual understanding and unity.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, a staunch supporter of the lion dance, lauded the cultural significance of continuing the culture.
“It is not merely a cultural performance; lion dance is also a sport that requires physical strength and agility.
“Younger participants can learn this tradition from an early age. This activity helps to shape their personality, foster trust, and ensure they grow up with a deep appreciation for our culture.
“In our multi-ethnic society, such activity serves as a catalyst for harmony. Both art and sports play pivotal roles in strengthening unity among the community.
“We need to consistently promote the lion dance culture to elevate it onto the international platform,” he said during the lion dance competition at SJK (C) Keng Koon in Simpang Ampat today.
A total of 12 teams, comprising six from primary schools and six from secondary schools in Penang, competed in the competition.
Chow commended the Penang Chinese Town Hall and other relevant parties for organising the event.
Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik contributed RM5,000 to the competition, expressing his hope for the continued legacy of lion dance.
The competition’s organising chairman Ho Yew Kuan thanked the state for supporting the initiative, emphasising that participating teams have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of cultural values.
