CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow is hopeful that this year would be a year for recovery, consolidation and strength for the people.
In his speech during the Spring Festival reception hosted by the People’s Republic of China at Kwong Wah Yit Poh in Lebuh Presgrave, Chow remained optimistic.
“I am truly honoured to be here by the invitation of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang to celebrate the Spring Festival.
“The friendship between Malaysia and China has withstood the test of time. Forty eight years is a long time to commemorate the bilateral ties and diplomatic relations we have forged between both nations.
“For almost five decades, our bilateral trades, cultural exchanges, tourist arrivals and education opportunities have been expanding; except for the past two years when the Covid-19 pandemic hit us.
“We must still carry on with the good work and strive for the goals that we have set for ourselves,” he said.
Chow pointed out that the year 2022 has been set to be the year of recovery for the tourism industry.
“We have allocated RM50 million for promotional activities, tourism development projects and grants for stakeholders to boost our local tourism industry.
“The number of Chinese tourists is expected to return, with the various promotion taking place this year to rebuild our tourism industry.
“This bodes well for greater bilateral ties between Malaysia and China,” he said.
Chow believed that China has its potential to participate in the ‘Phase 2: Accelerating Penang2030’ which was launched a week ago.
“One of the key initiatives is the ‘Industry Engagement Initiatives’, which I believe China can share its experience with us.
“Let us toast for a lasting friendship between the state government and the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang,” he added.
Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang Lu Shiwei expressed hope for continuous bilateral relations with the country.
“We look forward to having more exchanges and growing our friendship, especially with the four northern states in Malaysia.
“We wish to have a long-lasting friendship as we usher in the Year of the Tiger,” he said.
The reception was also broadcasted live on social media.
Also present virtually were representatives from various associations.
