ESTABLISHED in 1944, Penang’s oldest coffee factory marked two major milestones: earning its second recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) and celebrating the grand opening of its fifth outlet.
SBK Coffee, also known as Sin Boon Kee, has evolved from a modest family-run operation into a thriving enterprise, celebrated for its signature Nanyang coffee blends.
Fourth-generation owner Jonathan Chan, the company’s chief executive officer, described SBK Coffee as a shining example of the harmonious fusion between tradition and innovation.
“Today, we are not just celebrating milestones; we are redefining coffee innovation,” he said.
“One of our standout accomplishments, which earned us recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), is the Nitro Nanyang Cold Brew Coffee – the world’s first coffee of its kind.
“This extraordinary creation perfectly embodies the balance between heritage and innovation.
“By combining the timeless ‘Nanyang’ brewing process with the refreshing smoothness of cold brew coffee, we have crafted a beverage that bridges the gap between tradition and modern sophistication,” he said in his speech during the grand opening ceremony of its fifth outlet at Sunshine Central Mall today.
Chan highlighted that the Nitro Nanyang Cold Brew Coffee is a revolutionary product in the coffee industry.
“We secured our place in the MBOR by selling an impressive 11,111 cups of Nitro Nanyang Cold Brew Coffee in a single day on Nov 11.
“This achievement not only underscores its widespread appeal but also showcases the boundless possibilities when tradition meets cutting-edge technology,” he said.
Two years ago, SBK Concept Store was listed in MBOR for having the most drink product varieties in a concept store with 26 varieties.
Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng described SBK Coffee’s journey as a remarkable tale of tradition harmonising with innovation.
“From its modest beginnings to becoming a household name, this 80-year-old brand exemplifies the strength of staying rooted in heritage while boldly embracing progress.
“The creation of the Nitro Nanyang Cold Brew Coffee is a standout achievement – a masterful fusion of tradition and modernity, crafted to captivate a global audience.
“SBK Coffee has proven that with the right vision and unwavering determination, a local Penang brand can not only compete but also set new standards on the global stage, excelling in sales, quality, and creativity,” Ng said.
Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng extended his heartfelt congratulations to Chan and the SBK team for their outstanding achievements.
“SBK Coffee serves over 100 million cups of ‘kopi o’ annually across Asia, a testament to its enduring appeal and quality.
“This new outlet by SBK Coffee is more than just a store – it reflects the unwavering passion and dedication of the staff and management.
“Here, patrons can savour premium coffee blends like the Royal Black Coffee, a proudly homegrown product from Penang.
“We encourage the people of Penang to support local brands by enjoying Penang’s very own coffee,” he said.
Lim also shared his thoughts on the thriving business community in Penang.
“We are incredibly proud of Suiwah Corporation Bhd, led by its managing director, Datuk Hwang Thean Long.
“Having SBK Coffee, Penang’s oldest coffee factory, open an outlet in a Penang-based departmental store like Sunshine Central Mall is a testament to the synergy between local businesses.
“This achievement truly showcases the spirit of ‘Pulau Pinang Boleh!’” he added.
Also present were Thean Long and Crimson Omega chief executive officer Cynthia Hwang.
