PENANG’S allure in the global semiconductor market remains strong, evidenced by the recent expansion of another prominent multinational company in the south Seberang Perai district.
Ultra Clean Technology (UCT) Sdn Bhd has invested RM250 million to grow its plant at Batu Kawan Industrial Park (BKIP), further solidifying the state’s position as a key player in the industry.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, during the UCT opening ceremony, expressed his delight at this significant milestone.
“UCT stands as a premier developer and supplier of critical subsystems, components, parts, and ultra-high purity cleaning solutions.
“The initial phase of the plant, completed in 2021, prioritised the manufacturing of weldments, frames, and modules within a 300,000sq ft floor space.
“Commencing in 2022, the second phase of construction added an additional 250,000sq ft, enhancing valuable vertical integration capabilities. Phase Three aims to augment the plant’s manufacturing scale, ensuring continued growth and innovation.
“I am highly confident that UCT will reap significant benefits from its operations in Penang,” he said in his speech during the opening ceremony at BKIP today.
In addition, last year, UCT acquired nine more acres of adjacent land, paving the way for further development.
Chow stressed the state’s ongoing commitment to continuous improvements in positioning itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
“Aligned with the country’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, Penang is poised to lead the charge in attracting investments.
“We applaud the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) for spearheading efforts to develop a Comprehensive Semiconductor Strategic Plan, which will further bolster our semiconductor ecosystem.
“We prioritise sustainability efforts to foster an environment conducive to industry players, ensuring long-term viability and responsible growth,” said Chow.
Chow commended the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and InvestPenang for their steadfast efforts in upholding Penang’s position over the years.
UCT chief executive officer Jim Scholhamer said UCT was proud to partner with the state and MIDA to scale up its global footprint.
“This facility will ensure business continuity, enhance our service capabilities, and deliver value to both local and global customers alike,” he said, adding the facility has now expanded to over 600 employees.
Among the notable attendees were InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian, MIDA Penang director Muhammad Ghaddaffi Sardar Mohamed, UCT Board of Directors chairman Clarence Granger, and UCT chief finance officer Sheri Savage.
