THE number of applications to set up temporary roadside stalls to sell vegetarian food in conjunction with the Nine Emperor Gods’ Festival this year has decreased.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Nicholas Theng said as of noon today, MBPP has received a total of 39 applications compared to 73 last year.

Over at the mainland, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) councillor Tan Chee Teong said only 14 applications have been received to date compared to 30 last year.

Both councillors acknowledged that the decline in applications has to do with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Dine-in at the roadside stalls is still prohibited while only takeaway is given the greenlight.

“Only eateries and food complexes are allowed to provide dine-in for people who are fully vaccinated.

“The safety of the people and public health are of utmost importance during this period.

“We are still following last year’s guidelines to ensure everything is under control,” said Theng.

The nine-day vegetarian festival will take place from Oct 6 to Oct 14.

Many devotees usually observe a vegetarian diet a day earlier to cleanse themselves.

Most of the temples celebrating the festival are expected to do so in a modest scale amid the pandemic.
