PROFESSIONALS, Geographical Information System (GIS) industry players, and government agencies come together to learn about the latest GIS technologies and applications during the Penang GIS Day 2023 at Olive Tree Hotel here.
Held for the first time, the programme was a great opportunity for participants to share knowledge on the use of GIS and the latest technologies in the market.
The programme, themed Towards Harmonious Smart City, was organised by the state Town and Country Planning Department (Penang PLANMalaysia) in collaboration with the Penang State Secretary’s Office.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the programme was a testament to the state’s commitment to advancing progress, particularly for players in the GIS field.
“The programme is in line with the aspirations of the Penang2030 vision.
“Our policies and initiatives introduced are aimed at achieving the goals and direction of a smart state,” he said in his speech.
Chow added that well-planned strategies and agendas would help to strengthen the overall development landscape of Penang as an inclusive and sustainable state.
“We hope that this platform will help us to generate a more advanced and competitive ecosystem, especially in the geospatial and technological fields, as we face future challenges.
“Congratulations to Penang PLANMalaysia and everyone involved for their commitment and dedication to making this programme a success,” he said.
Penang PLANMalaysia director Rozita Hamit said the Penang GIS Day 2023 was a platform for the industry to explore new prospects in the field.
Meanwhile, Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the GIS is crucial for urban planning, housing development, and the transition towards a smart city.
He emphasised the importance of data collection for the development of a ‘Harmonious Smart City’, which aligns with the ‘green and smart state’ agendas of the Penang2030 vision.
He stressed the need for continued efforts in data collection.
“The data collection and integration capabilities of GIS are essential for the development and planning in various fields, particularly in urban planning, land-use planning, and environmental management,” he said.
The event also saw scientist Dr Kam Suan Pheng being honoured with the Anugerah Tokoh GIS.
Also present were Penang State Secretary Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar and Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
