SOME 80 underprivileged families could not contain their happiness when they were presented with food hampers and angpow (red packets) by Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak during the Chap Goh Meh celebration at Heah Swee Lee Mansion in Bukit Tambun this evening.
Chap Goh Meh, is the 15th and last day of the Chinese New Year celebration.
Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik said the needy families were living in the vicinity of Jalan Bukit Tambun.
“Each family is given a hamper containing basic necessities such as vegetables, biscuits, noodles, canned food and coffee.
“Each hamper costs around RM80 and a total of 488 angpow packets (RM5 each) were given out.
“My service centre covered part of the cost while the rest was sponsored by a private company.
“I would like to thank the donor for its kind contribution,” Goh said during the ceremony.
Also present were Ahmad Fuzi’s wife Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor and Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto.
Those present were entertained by multi-cultural dance performances, lion dance, and musical acts.
Goh thanked Ahmad Fuzi and his wife for spending their time to celebrate the Chap Goh Meh with the Bukit Tambun community.
“This is the first time that Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his wife Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor are here to celebrate this joyous celebration.
“Their presence meant a lot to me and the community. The festivity is organised in a small scale in view of the current Covid-19 situation,” Goh said.
