THE annual Chingay Festival, a source of pride for Penang, drew crowds lining the route from Padang Brown to Light Street, despite the rain.
The spirited spectators were treated to a dazzling parade featuring 45 teams, lasting from 7pm to 11pm, with a stunning fireworks display capping off the night.
Traditional performances, including lion and dragon dances, enchanted the sea of onlookers.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow praised the event as a vital cultural celebration in the state, fostering community bonds.
“I trust that both Penangites and visiting tourists relish the significance of this event. It serves as an eye-opener, offering them a glimpse of this eagerly awaited, adorned spectacle.
“This annual celebration draws a multitude of tourists, contributing significantly to the promotion of the tourism sector,” he emphasised in his address at the event.
State Tourism Chairman Wong Hon Wai aspired for Chingay’s recognition on the international stage, highlighting its role in promoting tourism.
Among those present to witness the spectacular event were Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Deputy Finance Minister; state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim; state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu; and George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee.
