IN the bustling heart of Penang’s Chowrasta Market, a small corner on the second floor holds a legacy of beauty and tradition. For the past decade, 56-year-old Apple Cheang, fondly known as ‘Apple,’ has been meticulously practising the traditional art of face threading.
As the first-generation practitioner of this business, she has dedicated herself to preserving this vanishing skill, not only for its aesthetic benefits but also for its deep-rooted cultural significance.
Cheang’s journey into the world of face threading began with her role as a traditional bridal chaperone, where she was responsible for preparing brides for their big day. Encouraged by her brother, who noticed her natural eloquence, she decided to deepen her understanding of wedding rituals, customs and ancestral traditions, including the art of face threading. To master the skill, she received guidance from an 80-year-old master, who is now residing in the United States.
“I spent years to understand every aspect of our traditions, from the Three Letters and Six Etiquettes to the finer details of bridal preparation, including face threading.
“Marriage is not just about two people; it’s about learning how to respect and love one another, and how to be filial to parents. Even if times have changed, these values should remain,” she said.

Now, she is passing down her face threading knowledge to her 22-year-old daughter, Jojo Ng, a Communication student at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). While it took Cheang three months to master face threading, Jojo picked up the skill in just two weeks, proving that the next generation is ready to carry the torch.
According to Cheang, face threading is a natural way to achieve healthy, radiant skin. She explains that the process promotes blood circulation, enhances skin metabolism and improves the absorption of skincare products.
The gentle threading motion acts as a facial massage, helping to brighten the complexion and maintain skin elasticity. While hair removal is an additional benefit, it also minimises pores, making the skin smoother and more refined so that the skin is fresh and glowing.
The key component of her method is the use of red thread, which she insists on using for its auspicious properties that enhance positive energy. Another essential ingredient is Begonia Powder, a traditional powder passed down from her grandmother’s time, known for its ability to absorb oil and extract impurities.

Traditionally, brides undergo face threading before their wedding day for smooth, radiant skin and good fortune. However, Cheang emphasises that threading is not limited to brides. It is a natural and traditional skincare practice suitable for everyone, providing both beauty and wellness benefits.
Each of Cheang’s sessions lasts between five and 15 minutes, priced at RM15 per session. Over the years, she has built a loyal clientele, with customers traveling from Kuala Lumpur and Johor just to experience her expertise. She is also regularly invited to cultural events like the Penang Miao Hui, showcasing the uniqueness of this traditional craft.
Despite advancements in beauty technology, Cheang firmly believes that AI cannot replace the human touch of face threading. Her dedication, along with Ng’s enthusiasm, ensures that this art form continues to thrive.
“Face threading is more than just a skill; it’s a cultural heritage. I hope to pass it down because it’s almost lost, and it’s not easy to master. The hand movements matter,” said Cheang.
Cheang further revealed that beyond her dedication to this vanishing craft, she is also a passionate actress. She frequently appears in student films at Han Chiang University College of Communication. Her lively personality and natural charisma have made her a sought-after talent, further proving that she is not only skilled in preserving tradition but also in modern storytelling.
For those seeking a piece of Penang’s living heritage, Apple Cheang’s face threading service is available by appointment only at 2-23 Pasar Chowrasta, 10000 Jalan Penang, Pulau Pinang. To book a session, contact 011-28733912.
