Artist makes a difference with eco-friendly products

AS an artist, Howard Tan has always wanted to create something that people can relate and identify.

Besides selling unique photo prints of Penang which he created, Tan designs upcycled bags made of batik cloths, grain bags, gunny and other recycled materials.

“I want to create products that are unique for my customers and these upcycled bags are distinctive and eco-friendly.

“Each product has its own unique feature and design,” Tan, 46, told Buletin Mutiara at his shop in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling today.

Tan encouraged more people to buy upcycled products.

“We can save the environment and at the same time these items are functional and stylish,” he said.

Aside from upcycled bags and photo prints, Tan also sells collages, postcards, crafts, pre-loved books, batik face masks, vintage and collectibles to name a few.

Tan showed Buletin Mutiara some of his ‘Birdman series’ collages during the interview.

“I put together old photos, old stamps and other vintage materials to make the collages. We have customers who are looking for such unique pieces of art,” he said.

Tan said he has about 70 to 80 ‘Birdman series’ collages.

He said he promoted his products online, in view of the Covid-19 challenges.

“I receive online orders from customers occasionally. Some from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
