THE much-anticipated Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) kicked off early this morning near Aspen Vision City Central Park in Bandar Cassia, Batu Kawan, drawing an impressive crowd of over 22,000 participants from 65 countries and regions.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the guest of honour, flagged off the full marathon at 1.30am, which saw 4,202 runners registered for the event. He is also expected to flag off the half marathon at 3.30am for 9,284 runners (42.2%) and the 10km Run at 6am for 8,536 runners (38.8%).
Of the over 22,000 runners, 92% are Malaysians, with the remaining 8% hailing from overseas.
This marks the first time the Penang Bridge International Marathon has started in Batu Kawan, utilising the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, also known as the second Penang Bridge. The bridge previously hosted the marathon in 2014 to commemorate its inauguration, but the start and finish point then was at Batu Maung.
The second Penang Bridge has been temporarily closed until 10am today, while the first Penang Bridge remains open throughout.
Accompanying Chow at the opening of the Penang Bridge International Marathon this morning were state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid and Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA) president Datuk Syed Mohamad Aidid Syed Murtaza.
Chow expressed his enthusiasm for the marathon’s unique combination of sport, culture, and tourism.
“Every year, the marathon entices participants worldwide, not just for the race’s challenge but also to indulge in Penang’s lively culture and stunning vistas.
“I hope everyone enjoys the opportunity to breathe in the fresh air while tackling this scenic route,” he said.
He added that the Penang Bridge International Marathon is more than just a race.
“It is a celebration of health, resilience, and the spirit of togetherness. This year’s collaboration with Aspen and Klippa Shopping Centre underscores the importance of partnerships in enhancing Penang’s reputation as a global sporting and cultural destination.”
Earlier, to set the mood for the marathon, Wong’s office, PETACE, organised the Run Rev Carnival at Vervea Highstreet, Aspen Vision City, on Dec 14 from 6pm to 1am.
The vibrant celebration brought together fitness enthusiasts and fans of health and entertainment, creating a buzz of excitement ahead of race day.
Highlights included a variety of musical performances and cultural showcases, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display just before the start of the full marathon.
Later, participants will also have the opportunity to win exciting prizes in a lucky draw, including two cars (a Myvi 1.3G ASA Auto and an Axia 1.0G) and three motorcycles (SM Sport 110E).
