THE Batu Lancang Public Market has become the site of a pioneering project featuring the vertical planting of 400 ferns, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable urban greenery and addressing climate change.
This innovative approach, spearheaded by Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Choong You Ray, began a few months ago with a budget of approximately RM18,000.
“As we know, vertical planting is essential for improving the ecosystem in Penang, as it maximises limited urban spaces.
“This initiative is part of the city council’s broader efforts to mitigate climate change and curb the effects of global warming.
“Following its success, we hope to replicate this project in other constituencies, particularly at MBPP-managed facilities like public markets and pocket parks,” said Choong during the project launch.
The project was officially launched yesterday (Dec 11) by MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran in the presence of Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong and MBPP secretary Cheong Chee Hong.
Rajendran highlighted the importance of vertical planting in urban settings.
“This method is crucial for saving space, especially in residential areas.
“Moreover, it significantly reduces the carbon footprint, contributing positively to the environment,” he stated.
He also announced a city council programme designed to teach the public how to implement vertical planting at home, featuring automation systems to simplify plant care for those with busy schedules.
“We also strongly encourage private companies and developers to support and adopt this initiative to enhance its reach,” Rajendran added.
Meanwhile, Ong praised Choong for his vision and expressed hope that similar projects could be expanded across Batu Lancang.
“This initiative not only benefits the environment but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of our urban spaces.
“After all, the Batu Lancang Public Market’s vertical planting project represents a vital step towards integrating sustainable practices into urban development, setting an example for other communities to follow,” he said.
