THE Batu Lanchang Food Court will launch a green initiative to reduce waste and promote sustainability starting from May 15.

Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong announced that as part of this initiative, hawkers will no longer provide customers single-use paper and plastic plates, cups, forks, spoons, and chopsticks.

“Earlier, Batu Lanchang Food Court representatives discussed this matter with me, and I felt that this was a good idea to preserve the environment.

“They will cease providing single-use paper and plastic plates, cups, and chopsticks to dine-in customers, and all hawkers here have agreed to this policy.

“For takeaways, plastic packing will still be used, but we strongly encourage patrons to bring their own tiffin carriers for food packing,” Ong said during a press conference at Batu Lanchang Food Court today.

Apart from that, Ong said the hawkers are encouraging customers to return the plates and utensils to the respective stalls or put them at the nearest designated spot.

“Each stall will be equipped with two bins, one for collecting used plates and utensils, and another for food waste.

“We hope that the community will adopt this eco-friendly practice,” Ong added.

Ong also shared that four stalls, namely stalls no. 17,27, 64 and 76 are offering a promotion of RM1 for selected drinks if they bring their own tumblers and containers.

The promotion starts from May 15 to May 17.

Meanwhile, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Choong You Ray said the initiative undertaken by Batu Lanchang Food Court aims to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Also present were representatives from Batu Lanchang Food Court, Tan Ai Choo, Ooi Yong Kuang, and Yeap Boh Beng.

It is learned that Batu Lanchang Food Court comprises a total of 116 stalls, including 88 food stalls, six coffee stalls, and the rest are non-food stalls.
