Be watchful over Covid-19, Penangites told

FOLLOWING the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, Penang assemblymen are urging everyone to keep a watchful eye on what is happening and take necessary precautions.

According to the Health Ministry, a total of 691 cases were reported yesterday which is the highest number of cases recorded ever since movement control order (MCO) was implemented on March 18.

Kumaresan

Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan, when contacted, said the public needs to prioritise the safety of their health by avoiding crowded places.

“This is probably the third wave and a vaccine has yet to be found for this disease. Thus, it is important for all of us to stay alert and vigilant at all times.

“It is advisable not to organise events that involve a gathering of big crowd; it is better to postpone it to another time.

“Perhaps if there is a need to organise certain events, then it can be done in a smaller scale. For instance, religious gathering should be done while adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOP).

“The management of the concerned religious bodies should be accountable to implementing SOPs when organising such events,’’ said Kumaresan.

He also said vulnerable groups, such as children and senior citizens, should be protected.

“It is better for them to stay safe at home, and only take them out if there is an important thing to do.

“I have seen people bringing small kids to the malls. I feel that it is not necessary for us to bring kids to places like malls. We need to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.

“In a nutshell, I feel that the most important thing is to keep maintaining a good hygiene,’’ said Kumaresan, adding that he is happy with the compliance level of SOP in his constituency.

Ng showing the leaflets on the preventives measures to be taken by the public

Meanwhile, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng said a team from his service centre has gone all out to create public awareness of the pandemic.

“They went around distributing face masks and leaflets in the market areas to remind the public on the preventive measures to be taken during times such as this.

“The most important thing is to wash your hands frequently, maintain social distancing, and wear mask when you go out.

“Once you are done with your activities outside, please go back home immediately and do not linger around.

“It will only increase the chances of getting infected and I believe that the public will understand the severity of current situation. Maybe certain activities can be done in a virtual manner,’’ said Ng.

Ng also expressed his hope that all the states would be given equal importance and assistance in the fight against Covid-19.

“The state government will definitely cooperate with the Federal Government in eradicating the pandemic,’’ added Ng.

Mohd. Tuah

Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohd Tuah Ismail said the state government’s awareness campaign involving social distancing, masking up, washing hands or sanitising frequently and updates on the pandemic have been effective.

“I see that the awareness campaign on the preventive measures undertaken by the state government tends to complement the initiatives taken by the Federal Government in the new normal,” said Mohd Tuah.
