HENG Lee Lee (PH-Berapit) has proposed establishing a Tuna hub in Penang to revive the state’s former prominence in the tuna industry.

Heng suggested that the state government collaborate with the Federal Government to train local fishermen in tuna fishing techniques and explore ways to produce food products using tuna.

“In the 1980s, Penang was famous for its tuna landings, but that activity dwindled as many tuna operators moved to other countries.

“The tuna industry in Penang can also benefit surrounding sectors like tourism, food and beverage, and meet the needs of fishing crew members operating in the Indian Ocean throughout the month,” Heng said during the State Legislative Assembly at the State Legislative building in Light Street.

Heng also cited the Japan Tuna Industry as a reference to explain the benefits of the industry.

“Yaizu fish market in Japan is famous for tuna products. Besides being a busy fish port or fish market, it attracts tourists who visit the place to enjoy fresh tuna.

“Innovative traders there also create souvenirs and food products such as dried fish, snacks, and even ice cream made from fish,” Heng said.
