THE English section of Buletin Mutiara, represented by Chan Lilian, Danny Ooi and Victor Seow, took part in the “Oh, My Spelling! Competition” on Aug 20.
Morale ran high as the department had shone in the Public Speaking competition three months ago, where two members of our present team bagged the the first and third places.
The Corporate Communication Division of the Penang State Secretariat organised the trial run of the contest for all participating teams on Aug 10.
There were a total of 10 teams from an array of state departments and agencies, making it a total of 30 contestants.
The trial run went without a hitch and everyone was told the rules and regulations and what to expect on Aug 20.
The final seating arrangement for competitors on the stage was confirmed after a little re-shuffling.
In the competition proper, participants were given words like bristle, vintage, liaison, particular, nonsense, diabetes, awry, sanguine, camaraderie, miscellaneous, committee, velociraptor and many others – some the participants had hardly heard of!
When the final results were announced, the Corporate Communication Division, represented by team Letter Righters came out tops with the English section team, named Bravo, in second place followed by the Penang State Sports Council team under the banner of Warriors. Carolyn Ooi emerged as the overall Best Speller.
The prize money for 1st place was RM300, 2nd place was RM 240 while the 3rd place got RM180.
