WITH Deepavali just around the corner, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng brought cheers to the residents in the parliamentary constituency of Bukit Gelugor which covers the Air Itam, Seri Delima and Paya Terubong.
A total of 348 hampers were presented to senior citizens, the differently-abled and single mothers during a hamper giving away ceremony at the Desa Mawar Community Hall on Oct 27.
Deputy Chief Minister II Prof. Dr P. Ramasamy who graced the event stated that initiatives such as this portrays the Pakatan Harapan leaders’ thoughtfulness on the well-being of society and their desire to bring a message of hope and love during the festive season.
“This shows the (Pakatan Harapan) leaders’ care and concern for the community during the festive season.
“At this time, I would like to announce good news regarding the SJKT Rajaji where a piece of land will be given to the school by the state government. This is the moment that we have been waiting for and it is definitely good news for the Indian community.
“So, I would like to wish everyone to have a fun time celebrating the festival with your loved ones leaving behind our old ways (bad habits) as this is a religious occasion that should be celebrated in a respectful manner,” Ramasamy said in his speech during the ceremony.
Both the Bukit Gelugor and Air Itam representatives contributed RM15,000 respectively for the Deepavali hampers which each comprised grocery items worth RM70.70.
On the other hand, Ng urged the residents in the neighbourhood to come forward and get registered for the various ‘Program Emas’ offered by the state government as there are many who have yet to register.
According to the Happy Valley DAP service centre chairman R. Ganeson, this is the 5th consecutive year
the centre is organising the event which is under their community programme.
