AS Malaysia celebrates 67 years of independence, the United Buddhist Order of Malaysia (UBOM) will be organising the ‘Merdeka Blessings MahaSanghika Dana 2024’ on Sept 1.
The event is co-organised by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang and supported by Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico).
With the theme, ‘Harmonious Merdeka: Embracing Diversity with Kindness for a Brighter Tomorrow’, the event will be held at Dewan Besar Phor Tay, SMJK(C) Phor Tay in Bayan Lepas, from 7am to 2pm.
Organising chairman Cheah Kheng Huat said 67 revered forest monks will embark on a barefoot journey around the school to receive alms from the public, followed by ceremonies aimed at invoking harmony and prosperity for the nation.
“The participation of 67 revered forest monks aligns with 67 years of Malaysia’s independence.
“This year’s theme for this event resonates deeply with this year’s Merdeka spirit, ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka.’
“It epitomises a celebration of inclusivity, unity across diversity, and the rich cultural tapestry of our beloved Malaysia, fostering a spirit of harmony that transcends all communities,” Cheah told a press conference at the Penang Harmony Centre in Scotland Road today.
He further emphasised that the event is a significant milestone for the Buddhist community, symbolising hope, unity and kindness for Malaysia.
Also present were Thai Consul-General in Penang Datuk Raschada Jiwalai, organising vice-chair lady Dr Doreen Yeap, event adviser Datuk Seri Steven Ooi and Harmonico general manager Paul Au Chong Yee.
Cheah anticipates more than 5,000 devotees will attend the event.
Leading the sacred ceremony will be the venerable Phra VinayaDhammavithed @ Than Chao Kun Keng Khemako, accompanied by 67 esteemed forest monks and other revered members of the MahaSangha.
Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying will officiate the event and deliver the opening address.
Additionally, Raschada will represent the lay community by performing a solemn act of lighting candles and incense as an offering to the Triple Gem to sanctify this significant blessing ceremony.
Raschada also expressed his gratitude to UBOM for inviting the consulate office to co-organise the event, promoting Buddhism in Penang and fostering harmony among different communities.
Members of the public from all walks of life (non-Muslims only) are warmly invited to participate in this momentous occasion. For further information, please contact 011-5968 1192 or email [email protected].
