Build your inner strength through ‘Muay Thai

THE Thai martial art, or better known as ‘Muay Thai’ is more than just a self-defence sport as perceived by many.

The sport has gained traction among fitness enthusiasts in this modern era.

‘Muay Thai’ coach Mook Kok Hoong, 43, said the Thai martial art has numerous benefits and he welcomed the public to learn the sport.

The Penang Top Team Kombative Fitness coach said most people would ask him if ‘Muay Thai’ would pose any harm or danger.

“I would advise them to try it out first before judging. ‘Muay Thai’ is not necessarily a violent sport if it is perceived as a workout.

“It is a combination of cardio exercise, fitness and martial art. It suits those who have a lean and sculpted body through committment in training. I was lifting weights before I got myself into ‘Muay Thai’.

“If you love to challenge yourself, take up this sport. You will not regret it,” he said when met at the Setia SPICE Aquatic Centre.

He has won several ‘Muay Thai’ competitions in the past.

Mook, who has more than 10 years of experience in martial arts, has also took part in the Penang Festival Open Muay Thai Championship, Malaysian Invasion Mix Martial Arts and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu competitions.

“About 80% of my students join the ‘Muay Thai’ classes to remain fit and healthy, while the remaining few are serious about taking part in competitions.

“The classes are the best platform for the trainees to learn how to prevent injuries and to protect themselves,” he said, adding that he has about 300 active trainees.
