CARING for the elderly is not solely the responsibility of nursing homes but a collective responsibility shared by families, communities, and society as a whole.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised that, in line with the Penang2030 vision of building a caring and inclusive society, it is crucial to ensure that our seniors live with dignity, respect, and security.
Chow expressed his deep concern over the rising cases of abuse and neglect towards the elderly, highlighting it as a serious issue that requires immediate attention.
“I urge the Federal government to speed up the review and approval of the ‘Senior Citizen Bill’ to offer better legal protection and social welfare for the elderly.
“Let us work together to build a future where Penang is not only a thriving state but also a model of compassion and care for all generations.
“Today, we are more than just a community; we are a family. As a family, we value the wisdom, experiences, and love that our elders bring to our lives,” Chow said during a speech at Silver Jubilee Home’s Annual Chinese New Year celebration today.
Chow added that when he first introduced the Penang2030 vision, a strong emphasis was placed on the word ‘family,’ as it is the foundation of every society.
“Our values, culture, traditions, and upbringing all begin in the family. However, as we move closer to 2030, we must make sure that our elderly are not left behind,” he said while highlighting the importance of active ageing.
Chow shared that the state government is dedicated to supporting caregivers more effectively, recognising their vital role in maintaining family bonds.
“I understand that in today’s world, the lack of work-life balance has become a challenge in our society. Many Penangites are juggling their work while also caring for their elderly loved ones.
“Therefore, the staff and caregivers are our unsung heroes. To all the staff and caregivers here, thank you for your dedication and compassion.
“Your tireless efforts ensure our elders are treated with dignity and love. Your work reflects the values of kindness and community.
“I understand that caregiving for seniors can be challenging, but it is a noble calling. You are an important part of the family here at Silver Jubilee Home, and I hope that along the way, you have gained experiences that help you stay strong, even when patience is tested,” he added.
Also present were Chow’s wife Madam Tan Lean Kee, Datuk Seri Chong Eng, trustee of Penang & Province Wellesley Silver Jubilee Fund and chairman of the General Committee of Silver Jubilee Home, Silver Jubilee Home treasurer Datuk Ooi Hooi Kiang, and other dignitaries.
