THE Bukit Dumbar Village Community Management Council (MPKK) has emphasised the importance of acquiring life-saving skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). These skills, coupled with fire safety knowledge, are vital in emergencies.

To promote these capabilities, the Bukit Dumbar MPKK organised a ‘Fire Safety, CPR, and AED Awareness Programme’ at the Dewan Persatuan Penganut Dewi Ma Chor Poh today.

Bukit Dumbar MPKK chairman Yeoh Chin Beng highlighted the significance of the initiative, particularly after a fire incident in the neighbourhood, also known as Bukit Dumbar ‘Bangliau,’ on July 6 this year.

“A total of six houses were affected in the fire, with some suffering complete loss. It is important for everyone to learn these essential skills,” Yeoh said.

“With the generous contributions from the residents here and the temple (Persatuan Penganut Dewi Ma Chor Poh), an AED unit costing RM11,000 has been installed in this neighbourhood.”

The CPR and AED training was conducted by MyAED4U, led by its director Steven Yeoh, while the training on how to handle fire extinguishers was provided by the Lebuh Bakau Volunteer Fire Brigade.

State Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim praised the Bukit Dumbar MPKK for organising the awareness programme. She also contributed 100 small fire extinguishers to the residents to bolster safety measures.

“Thank God, there were no casualties during the fire outbreak.

“The six affected households have since rebuilt their homes with support from the Penang TYT Disaster Fund, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, myself and their own resources.

“There are a total of 90 households in this neighbourhood,” Lim added.

Steven Yeoh told Buletin Mutiara that, in addition to learning CPR and how to use an AED, another important skill is knowing how to rescue victims from choking.

“These are life-saving skills that everyone should be equipped with,” said Steven Yeoh, who formerly worked as a nurse.
