THE town of Bukit Tambun turned into a spectacle of colours, lights, and cultural heritage as thousands gathered to celebrate Chap Goh Meh near SJK (C) Keng Koon this evening.

The grand celebration featured an array of traditional performances, including mesmerising drum and dance displays, an energetic dragon dance, and a breathtaking fireworks show that lit up the night sky.

One of the main highlights was the 1.5km lantern parade, where participants carrying glowing lanterns made their way from Jeti Bagan Bukit Tambun to SJK (C) Keng Koon, creating a radiant sea of lights.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the event also hosted a variety of food stalls and interactive cultural booths, offering attendees a chance to indulge in delicious local delicacies and learn more about Chinese traditions.

Chap Goh Meh, also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, marks the 15th and final day of the Chinese New Year. The festival is deeply rooted in tradition and symbolises unity, new beginnings, and the hope for prosperity in the year ahead.

The celebration was organised by the Bukit Tambun constituency service centre, with Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik emphasising the significance of the occasion.

“Chap Goh Meh is a joyful blend of love, culture, and the spirit of the New Year. One of its most popular traditions is the tossing of mandarin oranges, where single women write their names and contact details on oranges before throwing them into rivers or lakes, hoping to find a good match,” Goh said in his speech at SJK (C) Keng Koon.

He also highlighted that Chap Goh Meh is a cultural rather than a religious event, making it an inclusive celebration that can be enjoyed by people of all backgrounds.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the event, expressed his delight at witnessing the diverse crowd coming together to celebrate the occasion.
