THE proposed redevelopment plan of Burmah Square is still pending approval by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) had submitted its application to MBPP recently for planning permission.
“The neighbouring lots are aware of the proposed project. They have been informed.
“The reviewing of the components and designs of the proposed redevelopment plan can proceed,” Chow told the media at PDC in Bayan Lepas today.
He added that a property owner near Burmah Square had filed a legal suit against PDC and the state government over the proposed project.
“As defendants, we will have our legal representations to manage the case.”
Chow also said that the proposed project was not expected to commence anytime soon, at least not until 2024 or 2025.
“The tenants have been given an extension and a discount on their rental fees,” he added.
Chow said the appeals by the tenants, concerning the rent of properties in Burmah Square, would be given due consideration.
He added that developments involving Category Two heritage buildings would have to comply with strict guidelines.
“It does not mean that redevelopment projects cannot take place.
“For example, the façade of the structure must be conserved but the rear portion of the building can still be redeveloped.
“We have the Penang Structure Plan and other guidelines to comply with despite the absence of the local plans (Penang Island and the mainland).
“The drafting of the local plans for the Penang Island and the mainland is still ongoing,” he said.
