THE revival of the Bangkok-Padang Besar-Butterworth direct train service is set to be a catalyst for Penang’s domestic tourism and provide an alternative gateway for international tourists to visit the state, say local tourism industry players.
After a hiatus, the once-popular train service, which attracted tourists and backpackers, is set to make a much-anticipated return.
Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh believes the resumption of the service will benefit domestic tourism.
“The state Tourism and Creative Economy Office (PETACE) and the Penang Global Tourism (PGT) can organise roadshows in our neighbouring country to promote Penang’s destination.
“By collaborating with travel agents across the other side, we can elevate the state’s tourism. I am confident Penang will reap benefits from this,” he told Buletin Mutiara.
Similarly, the Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP) chairman, Datuk Ch’ng Huck Theng, expressed gratitude for the positive development.
“Tourists now have another option besides air travel. This is excellent news for us, particularly those in the tourism industry players, and I look forward to seeing the remarkable resumption,” he said.
Ch’ng also suggested a high-speed train service would be an even greater attraction to the commuters, drawing more visitors to the state.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai also welcomed the announcement by the Office of the Governor of the State Railways of Thailand.
