RIDING the digital wave is crucial to secure a better future.
In view of this, Tech Dome Penang organised the second Penang Digital Literacy Camp (PDLC) for pupils and students, exposing them to digital technology.
The camp was held from Dec 9 to 22 at Tech Dome Penang.
Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi said the camp provided an opportunity for the pupils and students to learn more about digital technology and at the same time raised public awareness.
“The participants took part in 61 sessions of workshops throughout the 14-day camp. There were virtual and face-to-face workshops.
“Among the programmes held were ‘Introduction to Roblox’, ‘Introduction to Minecraft’, ‘Machine Learning for Beginner’, ‘Data Analytics with Tableau’, ‘Cyber Security’, ‘Python Programming’, ‘Scratch Programming’, ‘Game Design with Scratch’, and ‘IoT Smart system using Arduino’.
“The free camp received strong participation from 1,955 people. They were not only from Penang but also from other states, including Perlis, Perak, Kedah, Terengganu, Sarawak, Johor, and others,” he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the camp today.
Khoo said the PDLC 2.0 was the last event before the end of 2022.
“As of November this year, Tech Dome Penang has held 176 STEM workshops involving 6,152 participants; and 13 STEM events which involved 22,584 participants,” he said.
Khoo also thanked the Penang Chief Minister’s Office, co-organisers (Forward School, UOW Malaysia KDU, SwissPac Edu, Caritech and CodeKidz), and sponsors – Analog Devices, Greatech Technology Berhad, and Motorola Solutions – for their support towards the event.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Tech Dome Penang for successfully organising the camp.
“I am happy to learn that some 280 underprivileged students from rural areas in five districts were transported by bus to take part in the Scratch programmes.
“The camp acted as a platform for the participants to be exposed to digital technology at a young age. The knowledge obtained could help them in the future,” Lee, who is also a Penang Tech Centre board member, said.
Also present were Penang Tech Centre board member Datuk Cheok Lay Leng, Penang STEM general manager Richard Chung, and the event partners.
