OVER 50 women are set to participate in the ‘International Women’s Day Car Boot Sale’ as traders on Sunday (March 26) at the open car park near Fortune Park, Jelutong.
The event is jointly organised by the Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK) Sungai Pinang, Village Community Management Council (MPKK) Bandar Baru Jelutong, JCI Pearl, JJC Penang Chinese Girl’s High School, JJC Union High School and Pertubuhan Alumni Sidang Wanita Pulau Pinang (ASWIP).
JPWK Sungai Pinang chairman Khor Kar Tien said the programme was initiated to provide a platform for women of all ages to venture into business.
“Our main aim is to encourage women to become financially independent which is something important for their livelihood.
“The ‘Car Boot Sale’ will feature sales such as F&B (Food & Beverages), DIY bakery, pet accessories, stationaries, art and crafts, pre-loved items (second-hand items), decorative balloons, plants and also clothes.
“We would like also to call upon children and young people to join the programme.
“For this event, we have encouraged school students to sell popcorn and cotton candy,” Khor said at a press conference at the Sungai Pinang service centre today.
Khor added that women need to have financial stability so that they do not have to stay in an environment that is harmful to them, especially when they become victims of domestic violence.
“If the event gets an overwhelming response, then we intend to hold it weekly,” she said.
Meanwhile, Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim said the programme will be held in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD) which is celebrated on March 8 every year.
“During the month of March, every JPWK has been encouraged to hold activities that are focused on women.
“Many women have talents and skills, but sometimes, they do not have the platform to show them, and they need encouragement, especially from us women.
“Women need to help women.
“So, we would like to urge all the women out there to grab this opportunity. Come and join us as it lasts only a few hours.
“Perhaps, once you have stepped up you can take your business to another level in future,” Lim said, adding that a supportive environment is essential for women to unleash their potential.
For those who wish to join, the participation fee is only RM10. The last day of registration is on March 25.
