THE Penang government views the recent spate of suicide cases at the Penang Bridge seriously.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the people’s well-being should be prioritised apart from the initiative of reviving the state’s economy.

“I hope the people in their surrounding and neighbourhood can play a pivotal role by caring for one another to prevent such incidents from happening.

“This can lead to a better living environment,” he said in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected council members of Hooi Lam Lian Heong Hoay, a community association, at Noble Season Chinese Restaurant in Penang Plaza, Burmah Road.

Chow expressed his hopes that the state government can engage with the various associations in the state.

“It is good that Hooi Lam Lian Heong Hoay has gradually started to be active after a hiatus due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“The state would also like to express our gratitude to this community association for their contribution to the society,” he said.

Chow also called everyone to be vigilant despite the relaxation of restrictions by the authorities.

Ong Eng Choon, who was re-elected as the chairman of Hooi Lam Lian Heong Hoay, appreciated the support and trust given to him.

“I hope everyone will work harder for the community while urging more youngsters to join the association.

“It is our hope to see new faces joining in,” he said.

Among those present were Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, Chinese Consul General in Penang Lu Shiwei and Hooi Lam Lian Heong Hoay members.
