THE caretaker state government needs the support and mandate of the people again in the upcoming state election to continue bringing betterment to the people of Penang, says caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow said this when he attended the launching ceremony of the roofed multipurpose court at Desa Mawar Air Itam today.

“More things are needed to be done and continued if we are given the mandate once again in the upcoming state election.

“Not enough with what we have done, we will also need to work towards realising Penang2030 vision until we become developed not only in terms of economy and infrastructure but socially developed as well,” Chow said in his speech at the event.

He also emphasised the importance of a balanced development on both the island and mainland, particularly in rural areas.

“With the formation of the unity government, several infrastructure projects have been announced . In addition, the state has initiated several infrastructure projects.

“So, while waiting for these projects to be completed, we need to focus on social development.

“I want the social development to be in line with the Penang2030 vision as well as to see the transformation of our ‘rakyat’ while enjoying the fruit of the economic growth.

“Social development is for all layers of the society, including infants, youngsters, the disabled, women and senior citizens. And these groups need special attention.

“The social development complements the infrastructure and economic development as they go hand in hand,” Chow said during a press conference held after the event.

It is learned that the then state government had allocated RM300,000 for the construction of the roof for the multipurpose court, but only RM242,000 was used.

Alongside with the launching ceremony, a community programme called ‘Jom Singgah Air Itam’ was also held, attracting residents from the neighbourhood.

Also present were Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, former Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and other dignitaries.

Touching on a separate matter, Chow said that the frequent visits by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Penang were aimed at enhancing the preparation for the upcoming state election.

“It is learned that the prime minister will visit the six states (including Penang) that are involved in the upcoming state election during his free time at various locations.

“This is to get closer to the community and understand their needs.

“During our meet-up yesterday, we discussed matters concerning the preparations for the state election and also political matters,” Chow said.
