CARTOONIST Mohd Azmi Mohd Hussin has made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) once again, now with the longest single comic strip produced in Malaysia.
Mohd Azmi, 37, took more than two years to produce the story of a Proton Saga, the first Malaysian car introduced in 1985.
“The comic, entitled ‘SAGA Kami’, depicts multiculturalism in Malaysia from the perspective of the car.
“The Proton Saga was first bought by a Malay family, before it was sold to an Indian family and then to a Chinese family.
“Some parts of the story were based on true events,” he said before receiving the MBR certificate from MBR chief operating officer Christopher Wong at the City Stadium today.
Wong announced that Mohd Azmi has managed to produce a 151m-long single comic strip.
“It is more than our 150m benchmark. Mohd Azmi has made it into the MBR with the longest single comic strip produced in Malaysia,” Wong said.
Mohd Azmi said he took 30 days to draw and complete the 510-page A4-sized ‘SAGA Kami’.
“I tried to draw five metres of comic strip per day and I completed it yesterday (Dec 11).
“The journey has been challenging. I want to thank my wife and family members for their understanding and support,” he said.
Mohd Azmi also thanked Yayasan Hasanah, ArtsFAS, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the state government, among others, for being part of his success.
This was Mohd Azmi’s third MBR recognition.
Back in 2017, he was recognised for making the most number of live caricature drawings within 24 hours. He managed to draw 320 caricatures.
Then, he produced the longest coffee painting in Malaysia in 2019. He spent 25 days to produce his amazing artwork which is 101m-long.
Legendary Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Mohammad Khalid, more commonly known as Lat, was also present at the event.
“Today, we celebrate the success of our cartoonist Mohd Azmi for producing the longest single comic strip produced in Malaysia.
“Mohd Azmi has set a high standard (in the industry),” he said.
Mohammad Nor said that those who have achieved success should guide the young and aspiring cartoonists.
“We should guide them and share our experience,” he said.
Also present were Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and MBPP councillor Datuk Dr Shahul Hameed Syed Mohamed.
