THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will soon upgrade the public toilet at Cecil Street Market, incorporating smart and green features.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng announced that the upgrading work will begin next week and is expected to take five months, with completion scheduled for February next year.

“The Cecil Street public toilet will be the first smart toilet in Penang, and this is our pilot project,” Wong said during a press conference yesterday.

According to Wong, the new facility will feature smart technologies, including a light sensor, a people counter to track the number of users, an ammonia sensor to detect odours, and touchless tap sensors for enhanced hygiene.

Additionally, the toilet will be equipped with a panic button to ensure the safety of women and differently-abled individuals.

“The green features will include renewable energy applications such as rainwater collection for toilet flushing, solar panels, vertical planting, and daylight-saving lighting,” Wong added.

Wong also mentioned that the renovation will provide a dedicated toilet for differently-abled individuals.

“There will be a baby room in both the men’s and ladies’ restrooms, as well as a breastfeeding room.

“A counter for the restroom attendant and a janitor’s storeroom will be included,” he added.

Wong assured that the council will take steps to minimise disruption for hawkers and customers during the renovation.

“A wall will be constructed to prevent dust from entering the hawker space,” he said.

Meanwhile, MBPP councillor Alan Lim shared that a temporary toilet will be set up near the existing one.

Also present were MBPP Building Department deputy director Tan Li Hai and Tanjong Service Centre representative Poh Cheng Han.
