THE Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has suggested a change in the free-meals distribution strategy to avoid food wastage.
Its president P. Murugiah pointed out that PHA has observed that some of the food donated by the kind donors to the homeless in town had gone wasted.
“Some of them were also left untouched.
“Although we welcome this noble gesture to feed the needy, we are concerned over the oversupply of food items, leading to wastage.
“Hence, we suggest to these donors to distribute non-perishable items, such as blankets, toiletries, first-aid kits, face masks, sanitisers and umbrellas.
“All these items can be utilised by the needy,” he said in a statement.
Murugiah said well-wishers can also provide free meals to the needy in the Peoples’s Housing Project (PPR).
“Donors can come to us or any other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to identify those needy individuals and families.
“By that, the issue of food wastage can be addressed,” he added.
