THE 15th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2023 officially started today at SMK St Xavier in Farquhar Street.
Players, as young as six and as old as over 70, thronged the Heah Joo Seang Hall at 7.30am this morning with much enthusiasm, determination and passion for the game.
Organised by the Penang Chess Association (PCA), the event is expected to conclude on Dec 24 with an estimated participation of 700 individuals in various categories.
Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) director Harry Chai Heng Hua said it was an honour for him to be part of an event that embodies values, where minds clash and strategies are rigorously put to the test.
“Chess, a game of intellect and foresight, has captivated the hearts and minds of individuals for centuries.
“It is a game that transcends borders, cultures and languages as it brings people together through mental processes and strategic thinking.
“I am very sure each participant has honed their skills and studied the classics, as well as analysed the game on a personal level before being here today.
“Participants, remember that victory is not solely defined by the number of games won but also the lessons learnt, and growth achieved.
“In chess, creativity and adaptability are essential elements.
“So, to all the participants, I wish you all the best and enjoy the game as it is, and at the same time, remember that regardless of the results at the end of the day, you are all winners,” Harry said in his speech during the opening ceremony today.
Meanwhile, Penang Chess Association (PCA) president See Swee Sie, during her speech, thanked the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for annually supporting PCA and its events, especially the Penang Chess Festival.
“We would also like to thank MSNPP for supporting us through an aid for this festival, and for consistently training our players that represent in Sukma games.
“My sincere thanks to the PCA committee members, SMK St Xavier for renting the school hall at an affordable rate and logistics assistance and our corporate sponsors,” See said in her speech.
The corporate sponsors are Best Point Electrical Chain Store Sdn Bhd and BWYS Group.
See, who is also the Malaysia Chess Federation deputy president, urged the crowd in the hall, including parents, supporters and partners alike, to play a key role in promoting chess in Malaysia, particularly in Penang.
“When it comes to chess, wherever you come from, including those people with disabilities, we are one family.
“To the participants here today, I encourage all of you to play in the spirit of sportsmanship and the rule of fair play,” she added.
