A LARGE number of Chinese semiconductor companies have shown interest in joining Penang’s semiconductor ecosystem, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow expressed his enthusiasm about the inquiries from these Chinese firms, noting that while substantial investment has not materialised yet, there is potential for positive developments in the future.
“We are prepared to welcome these companies if they decide to invest here after their initial inquiries.
Some Chinese firms are cautious about investing abroad, but we are optimistic about future opportunities,” Chow said during a press conference for the 2024 Asia Pacific Semiconductor Summit and Expo (APSSE) at Penang Marriott Hotel.
Chow highlighted his satisfaction with the collaboration between the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) and its strategic partner, the China Electronic Production Equipment Industry Association (CEPEA), in organising the event.
“The APSSE, scheduled for Oct 16 to 18 at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Bayan Lepas, represents a significant milestone for Penang, Malaysia, and the broader Asia-Pacific region, facilitating important exchanges in the semiconductor industry,” Chow said.
He noted that the APSSE would offer a platform for increased Chinese investment in the state and further solidify Penang’s position in the semiconductor industry.
“This event aims to enhance Penang’s standing in the semiconductor sector by fostering deep collaboration and innovation among industry players,” Chow added, anticipating thousands of attendees from various sectors.
MSIA president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai echoed Chow’s sentiments, noting that many Chinese firms are interested in establishing a presence in Penang.
“Their expertise is highly valued, especially in specialised subsectors like materials, insulation layers, thermal management, and interface materials.
“Their involvement will strengthen our semiconductor ecosystem and provide a significant boost,” Wong said.
He also expressed gratitude for the state’s strong support of the semiconductor industry’s sustainable development and looked forward to a promising future for the sector.
CEPEA branch secretary-general Steven Huang also expressed anticipation for the APSSE event, driven by the global semiconductor sector.
Earlier, Chow and Wong participated in a dialogue session with industry players, moderated by MSIA secretary Solomon Lorthu, addressing various issues including industrial lands, traffic management, water concerns, and infrastructure projects.
Chow also underscored the importance of prioritising Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
