WITH just hours to go before the polling day on Nov 19, candidates for the 15th General Election (GE15) are stepping up efforts to reach out to the community.
In Batu Kawan, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who is contesting the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat, together with about 20 of his team members went door-to-door at Ladang Chip Joo and engaged the residents there.
Also present were state Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng, and Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao-Leung.
While distributing recycled bags containing election paraphernalia, Chow, Chong Eng and Gooi spent some time at the Yee Ran Jing Sheh Handicapped Children’s Home Association.
The home, which was occupied by 53 special children, was established some 20 years ago.
The association secretary Siah Soo Chuan said the home was dependent on public donations.
“Our monthly expenses are about RM40,000,” he said.
Siah said the home was constantly in need of rice, cooking oil, and beverages (such as Milo, Ovaltine, or Vico).
After the visit, Chow told reporters that the support given to Pakatan Harapan was very encouraging.
“We hope that the support shown during our walkabouts will be reflected in the ballot results.
“If so, then Harapan has a high chance of defending the Batu Kawan seat.
He added that Batu Kawan is the industrial corridor of Penang in Seberang Perai.
“It is the development catalyst of the state,” he said.
Chow also visited Taman Seri Delima, Kampung Bukit Kechil, and the Juru night market.
Chow and his team greeted stall owners and patrons when they visited the Juru night market.
They visited the stalls to distribute bags filled with election paraphernalia.
Chow was also approached by several individuals who wanted to take selfies with him.
