IT is important to embrace solar photovoltaic (PV) technology as a proactive step towards a low-carbon and sustainable energy future, says caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow said this during his speech before launching the solar PV system at Marelli Automotive Lighting Malaysia Sdn Bhd in Batu Kawan Industrial Park (BKIP) today.
“We acknowledge the gravity of the global challenges posed by climate change and the far-reaching consequences it presents.

“Climate change is not just an environmental issue, but it poses a significant threat to our economy, society, and the well-being of future generations.
“It demands urgent and collective action from all levels of society to address this crisis.
“From the programme today, an estimated 4,382 megawatts (MW) of clean energy will be generated annually as it stands as a powerful testament to the immense potential of renewable energy sources in powering our state’s growth while minimising our ecological footprint,” said Chow.
According to Chow, the Penang government has been steadfast in promoting green energy adoption to ensure that social and economic development remains intertwined with environmental stewardship.
Aligned with the Penang2030 vision, the government previously launched the Penang Green Agenda 2030, a comprehensive strategy that has already achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of the Penang Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Taskforce (PREET).
The collective goal is to substantially increase the uptake of renewable energy and energy-efficient projects in Penang by 2030.
Chow, who is also the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) chairman, announced that PDC has taken a proactive step by forming Solar Voltech Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary that aims to harness the power of the sun to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
Through Solar Voltech, he stressed that PDC envisions transforming the way Penang generates and consumes energy by providing exceptional solar system solutions to government agencies and factories in Penang.
Chow believes that the cutting-edge technology employed in these solutions ensures high-quality, efficient, and reliable solar energy generation.
Speaking about the programme, Chow said PDC, via its subsidiary, PDC Nusabina Sdn Bhd and clean energy expert, Solarvest Holdings Berhad, has today announced the successful completion of the installation of 3.1-megawatt peak (MWp) solar PV panels and building-integrated photovoltaic panels at the rooftop and carport of the Marelli Automotive Lighting Malaysia.
The system, comprising 5,727 solar panels installed on rooftops and carports, showcases Penang’s commitment to combating climate change and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
PDC chief executive officer Aziz Bakar, who was also present, said the solar power system project aligns perfectly with PDC’s commitment to spearheading socio-economic growth and promoting sustainable development.

“By embracing clean energy and driving the transition towards renewable sources, this solar project will not only contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions but also pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and prosperous Penang.
“It also serves as a catalyst for growth, fostering a greener future while uplifting the socioeconomic well-being of the people we proudly serve,” he said.
Also present during the programme were caretaker Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Bukit Tambun candidate Goh Choon Aik, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Azhar Arshad, the Chief Minister’s special investment adviser Datuk Seri Lee Kah Choon and Solarvest Holding Berhad chief operating officer Vincent Yap.
