PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has confirmed his candidacy in the upcoming Democratic Action Party (DAP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) election, set to take place at the party’s 18th National Congress on March 16.

Speaking to reporters today after officiating the presentation of a firefighting vehicle to the Kuala Juru Volunteer Fire and Rescue Team, Chow affirmed his participation in the election.

“The nomination period has closed. Today, I can confirm that I will be contesting in the election on March 16,” said Chow, who did not take part in the Penang state DAP elections last September. He is currently serving his second and final term as Chief Minister of Penang.

When asked whether he is eyeing the position of National DAP chairman, Chow, who presently serves as vice-chairman, remained non-committal.

“The selection or appointment of leaders in the DAP happens in two stages. We first elect 30 candidates to the CEC, from which the national chairman, secretary, deputy chairman, vice-chairmen, and other key office bearers are selected,” he explained.

Pressed on whether he would accept the chairman’s role if offered, Chow responded: “The answer will be known on March 16. It is still too early to say anything.”
