PENANG caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has cautioned against complacency in the run-up to the state election on Aug 12.
Despite receiving an overwhelming response from the grounds ahead of the polls, Chow, who is DAP Padang Kota’s candidate, refused to let complacency set in.
“I have even received feedback just now, saying that we are expected to have a ‘clean sweep’ (sapu bersih) of the 40 seats that the parties in the unity government are contesting.
“I did not set such high hopes, but we will be delighted to achieve even more than 30 seats. I believe the support from the constituents would be even stronger in the final lap of our campaigning.
“From time to time, I will continue to have an engagement session and visit the 40 state constituencies in Penang before Aug 12.
“In fact, we will unveil our Penang Unity manifesto tomorrow (Aug 1),” he said during his walkabout session at the Chowrasta Market this morning.
During the walkabout, Chow, Komtar candidate Teh Lai Heng, and Pengkalan Kota candidate Wong Yuee Harng warmly greeted the traders, who responded with warm handshakes.
Many of the market-goers and traders also pledged their support for all the candidates.
Chow highlighted the positive transformations that have taken place in Chowrasta Market after being upgraded by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“We brought changes here, and even the food complex has been upgraded for public convenience.
“Since 2008, the market has totally been transformed, while its infrastructure has also been upgraded,” he said.
Furthermore, Chow emphasised the various initiatives and upcoming plans for the state, including the implementation of a fifth-generation (5G) broadband cellular phone and the expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas. He also mentioned upcoming expressway projects and other developments.
Teh, who accompanied Chow, expressed his hopes that the voters could render their support to the parties in the unity government to strengthen their positions at the federal level.
