THE Penang government is committed to promoting inclusivity among various cultures and religions in the state.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stressed the importance of understanding different faiths, irrespective of race and religion, to maintain the peaceful coexistence of diverse communities.
“In Penang, we have been living harmoniously among various communities. Therefore, religions should not be politicised by anyone.
“We will continue to actively promote cultural diversity and community tolerance,” he said during the 170th anniversary dinner of the Church of The Holy Name of Jesus in Balik Pulau today.
Highlighting the church’s historical significance as the oldest church in the state, Chow expressed gratitude for its contributions to the community.
“We hope the church will continue to become a cultural treasure of Penang, playing a vital role in preserving Hakka culture,” he said.
In addition to the church’s 170th anniversary, the church hopes to continue its ongoing community efforts.
Also present during the dinner were state Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi, Church of The Holy Name of Jesus priests Dominico Evan and Fr. Rudolf de Aquaviva, former priests of the church Fr. Anthony Liew and Fr. Martin Teng,
Penang Local Superior of Putri Karmel Irene Marie P. Karm and Sabah Local Superior of Putri Karmal Gerardine Marie P. Karm, and other distinguished guests.
