MARTIAL arts, like any other sports, is one of the ways to channel energy positively and in a healthy manner, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow, who is a big fan of the Wing Chun martial art himself, encouraged the public to learn it.
“In fact, the state has also organised and supported several sports tournaments involving basketball, volleyball, and table tennis that were promoted through the LovePENANG platform.
“We are still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, and there is no better way for us to bounce back apart from being active, and fit physically and mentally.
“Sifu Aaron Boey, who is the Wing Chun Master, has done remarkably well in making an entry into the Malaysia Book of Records.
“I am sure as a direct disciple of Grandmaster Ip Man’s son, Sifu Ip Ching, you have made your sifu proud of you,” Chow said in his speech when attending the certificate presentation of Malaysia Book of Records for ‘Most Wing Chun Performance by Individual’ at Phoenix Asia Rebirth Campus in Chulia Street Ghaut today.
Boey has been actively promoting the martial art through performances, live demonstrations, cultural and heritage events and workshops in Penang and China.
Chow stressed that martial arts, in general, is important for the people, and expressed hope that more people would pick it up.
“To date, Boey has given a total of 112 performances displaying the Wing Chun martial art. Wing Chun has caught the world’s attention with the release of the first Ip Man movie in 2008.
“I applaud Boey for his perseverance,” Chow added.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee also praised Boey for his achievement.
“As I remember, Boey was two years my senior during my high school days, and I still recall vividly how he started picking up the martial art back then,” he said.
Boey also thanked Chow, Lee and those present for valuing his feat, saying that he would continue promoting the Wing Chun martial art.
Also present were Penang Wushu, Lion and Dragon Dance Association president Datuk H’ng Ban Choon, Phoenix Asia Academy of Technology founder and president Kenneth Phoenix Quah and Malaysia Book of Records representative Edwin Yeoh.
