ACCURACY, impartiality, and transparency are vital in fostering people’s trust in the media, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow highlighted that maintaining a healthy relationship with the media is crucial for ensuring the state’s continuous economic growth and keeping the public well-informed about current events in an appropriate manner.

“The Penang government has always aspired to sustain a longstanding and fruitful relationship with the news agencies. Over the years, it has been evident that the people have been well-informed about Penang’s development across various sectors.

“Without the media personnel, it would be almost impossible for the rakyat to know the progress of all the projects we carry out, putting aside fake news and misinformation that’s been a trend these days.

“In my 40 years in politics, I have to be honest that sometimes I have been put to the test with challenging questions by the media. However, in that process, I often realised that I was also learning and sharpening my knowledge on that particular subject,” Chow said in his speech during the Penang Mutiara Media Club annual general meeting (AGM) at Ascott Gurney Penang in George Town today.

This year marks the club’s fifth AGM and the new faces to lead the club will be announced later.

Chow commended the club for its efforts to boost unity among the media personnel in Penang, whilst practising the highest level of integrity and professionalism in the journalism circle.

“The Penang Mutiara Media Club is not only a platform to share knowledge and experience but also an advocate for the rights of reporters and the interest of its members.

“With new faces ready to take up this challenge, I hope that the club will continue to stay relevant, effective, and instrumental in the news scene in Penang.
