THE Youth Climate Summit (YCS) Southeast Asia 2024 serves as a platform to empower youth to think critically and develop sustainable solutions that can make a tangible difference, says Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The summit, running from 9am to 5pm daily until Oct 18 at the University of Wollongong (UOW) George Town campus, is a five-day programme overseen by Penang Green Council (PGC) as the main organiser. Today marks the second day of the programme.

Speaking at the YCS dinner ceremony this evening, Chow praised the youth participants for their contributions to the climate summit.

Chow praised the youth participants for their contributions to the climate summit.

“With climate change being one of the most pressing issues of our time, it is inspiring to see so many of you taking the lead, showing that the future of this planet lies in good hands.

“Your willingness to learn, collaborate, and innovate will be key in shaping the solutions of tomorrow.”

Chow highlighted that the summit stands out not only for the knowledge it provides but also for the cross-collaboration it fosters.

“We are honoured to have stakeholders and partners from various agencies, such as PGC, Think City, The Habitat, PowerSains, and others coming together to support this initiative.

“This demonstrates that solving the climate crisis requires a collective effort – governments, the private sector and youth working hand in hand,” he added.

Chow encouraged the youth to stay engaged and energised as the climate summit continued, emphasising that their work extends beyond the five-day event.

“The climate action plans you create here can serve as the blueprint for real change,” he noted.

Meanwhile, PGC general manager Josephine Tan Mei Ling outlined the summit’s objectives, which include raising awareness about the impact of climate change and the role of youth in addressing environmental challenges.

“Through this programme, we aim to provide a platform for educating youth about sustainable practices and climate change while empowering them to take action in their communities,” she said.

Also present at the dinner were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Koay Gaik Kee and The Wild Centre director Jen Kretser.
