PENANG has been ranked the safest city in Malaysia, according to a recent survey by Numbeo, a recognition Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow warmly welcomed.
Chow noted that street crimes, including robberies and serious offences, have been under control in Penang for a long time.
Numbeo’s latest data ranks Penang 77th globally with a score of 69.7, the lowest crime index among five major Malaysian cities.
Chow highlighted this recognition would enhance tourists’ confidence in visiting Penang.
“There are more than 1,000 CCTVs (closed circuit television) on the island and over 200 on the mainland.
“There are plans to increase the number of CCTVs on the mainland to 1,000 within the next one or two years,” he added.

At the same time, Chow stressed the need to address crimes related to drug trade to prevent Penang from becoming a hub for drug trafficking from the north.
Meanwhile, Chow acknowledged that resolving Penang’s traffic congestion requires a combination of solutions, as no single measure can fully address the issue.
He said one of the ongoing efforts is the proposed parking time limit by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“Following the amendment of the Road Transport Act a few years ago, both city councils in Penang, MBPP and MBSP, appointed traffic wardens to help manage traffic congestion.
“They complement the work of traffic police,” he said.
