WITH less than a month away, Penang will find out whether Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow retain his post as the state’s DAP chairman or if a new leader will be elected to guide the party heading into the 16th General Election.
The Penang DAP convention is scheduled for Sept 22.
In response to a journalist’s question earlier today, Chow said potential candidates are expected to be notified in a day or two.
“Once notified, likely through letters, candidates will have two weeks to decide whether they wish to contest.
“Those who do not respond to the letter will be considered contesting, while those who choose not to run will need to inform the DAP national office,” Chow said during a media conference in Komtar today.
When asked if he would contest if nominated, Chow said he would consider the decision carefully when the time arrives.
Nominations for candidates closed on Aug 24 (Saturday).
To stand for a position, candidates must secure nominations from at least two branches.
There are 296 DAP branches in Penang, including 117 on the mainland, with each branch entitled to send seven delegates to the convention: the chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, publicity secretary, and the women affairs secretary.
According to recent news reports, Chow may face challenges from two prominent figures: Penang DAP vice-chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong and party secretary Lim Hui Ying.
Both Sim and Lim hold ministerial positions, with Sim serving as the country’s Human Resources Minister and Lim as the Deputy Finance Minister.
