CM Chow: Penang is open to ideas on Penang Sky Cab project

THE project developer of the Penang Sky Cab will have to ensure that the project is feasible and can be implemented.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Malaysian Resources Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRCB), the project developer, had proposed an adjustment to the alignment and the location of the project’s port of landing.

“MRCB had earlier obtained the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval for its original proposal from Butterworth to the Jelutong landfill at Persiaran Karpal Singh.

“The developer is now proposing for a change of alignment and location of the port of landing, so that it is closer to the inner city of George Town.

“MRCB is proposing for the port of landing on the Penang island to be located near the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal.

“We are open to suggestions. MRCB needs to ensure that the project is feasible and can be implemented,” Chow told a press conference after a public servants assembly at Komtar today.

Chow speaking to the media during the press conference.

Chow said that MRCB had presented their proposals to the state.

“The developer will need some time to do a research the new proposed location compared to the original location situated some three kilometres away.

“MRCB will also need to contact the Department of Environment (DoE) to seek their advice; whether do they need to submit a new EIA report following the change of alignment and the location of the port of landing,” he said.

Chow added that heritage assessment was another issue that the developer had to handle with the new proposal.

“The distance of the cable car system will be shorter with the new proposal.

“The proposed location can be at the Tanjung City Marina area or next to the ferry terminal.

“We don’t need a big footprint. The port of landing can be built on a state land or in the water itself,” he said.
