CM Chow welcomes Fed Govt’s investment plan for northern Perak to boost northern region ecosystem

THE Penang government does not view the Federal Government’s plan to bring in more investments to the northern part of Perak as a competition to Penang but sees it as an opportunity to further strengthen the ecosystem of the states in the northern region, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

Addressing reporters regarding the Budget 2024, which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday (Oct 13), Chow thanked the Federal Government for recognising Penang’s impressive investment records, labelling the state as a powerhouse in attracting world and internationally known companies to Penang.

“We are happy to be acknowledged for having a strong footprint in industries that have helped us prosper and boost the economy, especially the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry.

“As for the Government’s plan to establish a high-tech industrial area in the northern part of Perak, we, in Penang are optimistic that such a move will help boost the ecosystem in northern states, including Penang and Kedah.

“The three states can then together bring in new development to the northern corridor, in which Penang can serve as a main centre to this corridor,” Chow said during a brief media conference at Dewan Sri Pinang today.

On another matter, Chow expressed hopes that the Federal Government would consider speeding up the process to kickstart the long-awaited expansion project at the Penang International Airport.

He voiced his concerns following an announcement that the project is slated to only begin in September next year.

“Although we have built a reputation as an international standard E&E hub, it would be pointless if we can’t get our airport upgraded soon because the current one is congested considering the influx of visitors and tourists to Penang every year.

“This doesn’t give a good image. So, we hope this project can be given the utmost importance,” Chow added.

Separately, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also announced that the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system connecting the island and Seberang Perai, which is expected to cost RM10 billion, will be constructed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
